MUSIC LABORATORY MACHINES SUITE II

It's hard to believe that we have made the best part of 20 (including the 'lites') Music Laboratory Machines - that's almost one mad music machine a month for the last two years! Surprises even me!

We compiled the first lot into the Music Lab Machines Suite which has proven to be extremely popular so it seemed appropriate to create Music Lab Machines Suite II now that we've built so many more since.

The release of MLM Suite II also coincides nicely with the 50th anniversary of the longest running sci-fi TV series, Dr Who, the music for which was created on decidedly queer paraphernalia in the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop, a lot of it custom built by the BBC's technical department and which was very much the inspiration for the MLMs...

Suffice to say that Dr Who and the Radiophonic Workshop's ouevre were a big influence on me.

Powered by rich multi-samples from very retro, decades old valve/tube test oscillators and an extensive analogue modular synthesiser with multi-mode, Moog and VCS3 filters and a fixed formant filter, recifiers, ring modulator, a clipper and so on, sometimes by way of a wonky old reel-to-reel tape machine, MLM Suite II includes the 130p, the Advanced Noise Generator, Cathotron, Altaerion, Tesla Coils and all four MLM 'Lites' - Cronkotron, Sawpad, Squarepad and Stringodyne - and although not strictly an MLM, as a bonus, Jaypea with engaging samples from a well known 80s Japanese analogue polysynth is also included.

The total cost of those individually would be in excess of £50 so at a bundle price of £40, that's a saving of over 20%. Ten instruments, 2.5GB of samples, a load of presets and the 'Serendipity' button on many of them for creating sounds at random (which can be tweaked to your requirements and saved, of course), MLM Suite II is a powerhouse of quirky and eccentric 'radiophonic' sounds and an ideal adjunct to MLM Suite I - a worthy addition to any sonic arsenal in almost any musical genre.

The MLMs have been used in many musical genres, in film and TV soundtracks (some of them BAFTA and other award winners) and on many electronica albums.

Steampunk computer not included before you ask!

In a world awash with somewhat lifeless commercial samples, the Music Laboratory Machines stand out for their curious and rather unique charm and their gorgeously eccentric interfaces. They are all innovative and supremely affordable. Miss them at your peril.

I bought the first MLM suite a few months ago. I couldn't resist this one. That's my weekend gone.

Wonderful instruments as usual. I hadn't made the association of the MLMs with the Radiophonic Workshop but it all makes sense now. Good work all round.

Ashley

Stop tempting me with that beautiful steampunk computer. I know the screen is a mockup (and very well done I should add) but that computer! Drool. Damn I"ve seen the other Datamancer products - I wish I had more money.

Dean

Love the audio demo. You should make an album using only the MLMs. Or maybe I should haha

A lovely retrospective on the Radiophonic Workshop in your newletter. I grew up with Dr Who as well and your MLMs certainly capture the spirit of the old place at Maida Vale - I am sure that if the Radiophonic Workshop still existed, they'd have every one of your amazing machines. Delia would be very proud of you carrying on the tradition. You lot make great stuff that I am proud to own and dabble with. Thanks.

Stu

Can I have that gold retro keyboard and screen for Christmas?

Tom

To be frank your email updates are the only ones that I have not unsubscribed from.

You are so right about the Radiophonic workshop. I think that this is part of the reason I so love your MLM series ... and the rest ... despite the fact that my music is not particularly electronic. I always find a little corner to use one of your modules be it a crackle, a whoosh or an ethereal string section.

David

DAPHNEEEE!!!

Can't consider MLM Suite II for the enviable reason that I have almost all the components already

John

Murray Gold should have both MLM bundles to bring old school radiophopnica to the new Dr Who like the old days. I think the music's gotten boring with the OTT orchestral backing. And the original theme tune's been ruined IMO. They need some Hollowsun in there.

good luck to you and thanks for all the great sounds. They take me back to a simpler time when it wasn't all beats and loops.
