Released in the mid-'70s, Yamaha's CP
range of electric grand pianos were received by musicians to great
acclaim as they offered for the first time a true piano sound
in a (relatively) portable package for stage use. Being expensive,
they were first only adopted by the wealthier musician who was
serious about a live piano sound.
There were two main models in the range - the CP80
(88 notes) and the more popular CP70 (73 notes) although the CP70
was superceded by the CP70B that had balanced outputs for higher
quality sound. There was also a (rare) MIDI version that alowed
MIDI control of synths and sound modules
The CPs are real grand pianos scaled down in size (and
weight) for portability and whilst they don't have a totally realistic
acoustic piano sound, they do have a distinctive sound all their
own that was utilised and exploited by Peter Gabriel, Genesis,
Abba, George Duke, U2 and countless others who enjoyed this unique
sound live or in the studio. More recently, the UK band Keane
have adopted the Yamaha CP as their primary piano sound and it
is a trademark component in their music - it's even the featured
instrument image on their website. |
The Hollow Sun Definitive CP70B features
a re-conditioned CP70B from which every note has been recorded,
full length (over a minute at lower registers!) which, with a
piano action master keyboard reproduces as closely as possible
the feeling of playing 'the real thing'. Even with a synth action
keyboard, the sound is fabulously authentic!
I have also sampled every note (again, full length) through a
Boss/Roland chorus unit much like the one used by Peter Gabriel
to create his signature CP sound.
Uniquely, also included are various glissandos created by sweeping
up the open strings with a plectrum. |

In his review of the Hollow Sun CDs in 'Sound On Sound'
(October 2005 issue), Nick Magnus says of the Definitive CP70: |
| "The CP70 must be an elusive sound
to capture; the sampled renditions of this instrument that I’ve
encountered so far seem to lack a certain je ne sais quoi. It’s
notable then that Hollow Sun have rendered this amazingly accurate
and instantly recognisable representation, which is a real pleasure
to play." |

| Definitive CP70 is available for S5/6000
in a 'native' format CD that will just pop into your sampler's CD-ROM
(or Mac/PC for use with ak.Sys) without any form of installation
required. Also, of course, fully compatible with Z4/8 and/or MPC4000.

A marvellous piece created by Hollow
Sun customer Glenn Little - in Glenn's words: "It's a version
I created to recreate the wide, liquidy sound I associate with
Tony Banks". |

COMPATIBILITY
All these sounds are fully compatible with the Akai Z4, Z8 and
MPC4000. These sounds are also known to load directly into Kontakt
2.2 and Mach 5. The actual samples themselves should also be able
to be loaded into other samplers though you will have to do the
keyboard mapping, etc..
Given the differences in feature sets and/or user-interface implementation
between the different sampler formats, 100% compatibility cannot
be absolutely guaranteed and some minimal 'tweaking' of some sounds
may be required depending on the chosen destination format. Of
course, you will probably want to tweak the sounds to your requirements
anyway.
